Mississauga hosts large-scale Potentia solar PV projects; enlightened collaboration ushers in a new era in green energy
The situation: A city wants to greenlight a major solar PV project
Mississauga was the site of Potentia’s first six major solar PV installations. Both the city and its electric utility, Enersource, were cooperative and efficient in the provision of permits and all the necessary electrical requirements for these renewable energy projects.
The challenge: To produce 1.3 million kWh via solar PV
When completed (at end of 2010) these projects will generate a peak capacity of 1.1 mW and produce 1.3 million kWh.
The result: 60% of annual electrical use from the sky and the ground
This Solar PV project is one of two renewable energy projects for this particular building. Potentia is currently designing a ground-source heat pump installation with construction targeted to begin in late 2010. It will provide the majority of heating and air conditioning requirements for the building.
The green energy approach within this building is literally being driven top-down and bottom-up: The top-down portion thanks to Conundrum Commercial Management and the owners of 755 The Queensway; the bottom-up portion comes thanks to the key tenants in this building, Davis Design Group. The end product will benefit both Davis and Conundrum and the citizens of Ontario.
Once fully operational, the solar PV and the ground-source heat pump projects combined will generate (and thus displace) 604,000 kWh or 60 percent of the annual electricity usage of the building, a dramatic number by any measure.
Generating green electricity and new jobs
In our first 20 Ontario solar PV projects alone, Potentia is investing over $21 million to construct and operate new green renewable energy facilities. They will bring on line a peak capacity of over 3 mW and 4 million kWh annually. Alongside significant quantities of sustainable electricity, Potentia will generate many new high-value employment opportunities for Ontarians.
